Mid-Year Book Freak Out (Tag)

Heyo Bookaholics!

F*ck It’s June and also Tax Time! *high-pitched squeal* I really don’t know how time flew this fast, but I am so proud of what I’ve achieved in the first half of this year, that I ain’t even mad it’s June.

This tag was created by Chami from IsThatChami on YouTube, and I’m going to quote Anissa from SprinkledPages, and say that I literally cannot believe it’s the middle of the year! I’m freaking out seeing everybody’s freak-out tags and I thought I should participate!

Best Book You’ve Read So Far In 2018?

SHEIT! This is so fricking hard because I’ve read far too many good books this year I’m not even exaggerating. I’ve become harsh with my ratings and reviews, but all the books this year have just been amazing!!!

I’ve read a total of 12 books so far this year; and though it may not seem like much, the books I’ve read have just been magnificent I really cannot believe it!

Anyways, back to the question. The best book I’ve read in 2018 has to be I Was Born For This by Alice Oseman. It was wonderfully relatable and so beautifully written I even cried whilst reading it.

Best Sequel You Read In 2017?

Uhhhhh. I haven’t read any sequels this year… (see above). I’ve been meaning to get to the 3rd book in the Magnus Chase series, and I am currently in the process of reading Obsidio. So I will be reading sequels as I had planned.

Sequel That Came Out This Year You Haven’t Read Yet But You Want To?

The Complication by Suzanne Young was published Published on April 24th, 2018, and it is the fifth book in The Program series by the same author. I picked up the fifth book – The Adjustment – and wrote a non-spoiler reviewed of it earlier this year. I was waiting for The Complication to be released, but totally forgot about getting it every time I went to Dymocks!

Most Anticipated Release(s) For The Second Half Of The Year?

Queen of Air and Darkness!!!

“What if damnation is the price of true love?”

This is a spoiler-free zone so I will not be including the blub of this book as it contains spoilers from the first and second books in the series. As the Shadowhunter chronicles progress, the evolution of Cassandra Clare’s writing has improved so so much and has become what you see today in the Dark Artifices series; and is something that will continue to develop and evolve for her audience’s enjoyment.

Biggest Disappointment?

The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli. Though the characters were super cute and loveable, there were too many issues that could’ve been bigger and more impactful but they were all glossed over to make Molly’s failed romantic endeavours the main focus of the novel.

You can read more of my thoughts on this book in my semi-spoiler review, as well as the aesthetics I made for my depiction of the main character.

A Big Surprise?

Turtles All The Way Down by John Green. I’ve read probably three and a half of John Green’s books – the half being Will Grayson, Will Grayson – and I found all of them pretty mediocre and nothing special, but reading this book, I realised that all of John’s mediocre works lead up to this one magnificent masterpiece.

Favourite Debut Author?

I don’t actively pick out books from debut authors, and out of the 12 books read so far this year, only one of them is from a debut author.

Melanie Schubert the author of Gregory and The Grimbockle sent me a copy of her book in exchange for an honest review and I loved the book. I have a full review of it where I talk about the themes it portrays, the impact it had on me and how it’s such a wonderful book that can inspire children of all ages.

Most Fictional Crush?

not sure if anyone else feels the same way, but I don’t like crushing on boys that have been taken by someone else in the book; it just feels like a weird thing that I’d never do in real life.

Bill from Save The Date was the sweetest, most caring, fun and driven human bean and I think that Charlie deserves a man like him, but he also reminds me of my man in a way. My review for Save The Date will be up on the 2nd of July 2018.

Newest Favourite Character?

Jimmy Kaga-Ritchie

If you’ve read any of Alice Oseman’s books, you’d know how wonderful and full of emotion her characters are, and Jimmy is no exception. He comes out of her novel I Was Born For This which follows him, as a gay trans teenager in a One Direction style pop band, and Angel a devoted fan. His character is so raw and emotionally driven that it’s sometimes hard to sympathise with him, though it also shows band members in a more sensitive light under the pressure of the entire world.

Book That Made You Cry?

Following on from the above, I Was Born For This by Alice Oseman made me laugh, cry, want to yell and scream and feel all the emotions I ever felt remembering back to the time when I was a devoted fangirl.

I wrote a review for this book – though not as detailed as I would’ve liked – about everything I felt while reading this book. It took me on a journey that I would be devastated to have passed on the opportunity.

(also don’t mind me, I’m just quoting Harry Potter out loud while writing this…)

Favourite Video/ Blog Post You’ve Done This Year?

I have too many, I feel that I’ve been getting better at blogging and making my blog look aesthetically pleasing as of recently.

Here are two of my favourites (because I can’t choose):

Most Beautiful Book You’ve Gotten This Year?

A Thousand Perfect Notes by C. G. Drews or @paperfury on every platform.

I finally purchased a copy of it from QBD the bookstore, and it’ll show up again in my June Wrap-Up next week same day (Saturday 30th). I’ve heard amazing reviews for this book, and C. G. Drews was one of the few bookish accounts I immediately followed when I made a twitter account.

What Books Do You Have To Read By The End of The Year?

My TBR is MASSIVE so I’ve split it up into monthly Goodreads lists with 4 books dedicated to each month, but I don’t want to allocate books for the year too far in advance; so here is a photo of my goodreads TBR shelf for like ever!

  1. Lovely post Bree!!!! I had a great time reading your answers!!!! I’d love to hear your thoughts when you read the books on your TBR!!!!

  2. I Was Born For This is definitely one of my best reads this year as well! I had never read an Alice Oseman book before, but I definitely understand the hype now. I still have no words to describe that book haha.

    • OMG Yes I’ve never read one of her books and I’m so glad someone relates! I have her other two books to read sometime this year because I’ve heard amazing things about them, especially Radio Silence!!!
