Heyo Bookaholics!
I feel like I’m writing a Buzzfeed article (hehe)!
I had this totally original idea to match up books that I’ve read to people’s star/ zodiac signs. I have read and reviewed all the books mentioned in this post, so if you’d like to read the review prior to the book, they will all be linked in this post.
CAPRICORN
(December 22 – January 19)
Capricorns are awesome. Yes, I am a Capricorn and honestly, nothing defines a Capricorn more than the one line I found on this website that just says: “Capricorn dislikes almost everything at some point.”
Capricorns are independent, disciplined and represent time and responsibility. We belong to the Earth element and therefore put focus on the material world, which makes us grounded but also stubborn. That can only mean one thing: Elemental Fantasy Novel!
Reign The Earth by A. C. Gaughen
(the elementae book 1)
This book is full of elemental magic but most importantly Earth magic, family and powerful women. The segregation in this novel is morbid and morally wrong but I found that since some Capricorns have difficulty understanding those who are too far from their character, it kind of works.
AQUARIUS
(January 20 – February 18)
I know a few Aquarius (Aquari?) and they’re all very fun to be around. Original, independent, funny, but also can be shy and quiet especially when you first meet them. They are both introverted and extroverted at the same time!
The Astrid Notes by Taryn Bashford
Talking about coming out of one’s shell, The Astrid Notes is a novel about the power of music on recovery and forming relationships with others. Through this, our protagonists go through a journey of understanding oneself and each other through the power of music; occasionally falling back into bad habits and butting heads until they reach a breakeven point. It’s a beautiful emotional rollercoaster.
PISCES
(February 19 – March 20)
Pisces have been known to be friendly, selfless and willing to help without anything in return. They’re a water sign and characterised by their emotional capacity ad ability to empathise and sympathise with others.
The Red Scrolls of Magic by Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu
(the eldest curses book 1)
The Red Scrolls of Magic takes place after the war against Sebastian Morgenstern, where Magnus plans a relaxing vacation with Alec in Europe which goes a little off track due to Alec’s huge heart and need to help anyone who looks remotely in trouble. Alec is so empathetic to others who need help and Magnus is so smitten and in love with his boyfriend, that even when Alec throws himself into danger, Magnus is always a step behind to help him.
ARIES
(March 21 – April 19)
Aries always marks the beginning of things and are energetic beings that like to work at a fast pace in every situation. They like to take action and lead, often-times walking into things and situations head-first and afraid to take risks.
Watch Us Rise by Renée Watson and Ellen Hagan
This is a novel about two girls who pretty much start a rebellion at their school to stop misogyny and allow women to rise in the different areas of the school curriculum. This is a very relevant story for young women in today’s age and shows how determination and action will pay off and change the world into a place that is positive to live in.
TAURUS
(April 20 – May 20)
As an Earth sign, Taurus are well-grounded and surround themselves with love and beauty in every way possible. They’re practical, always choosing the most realistic path in life and find it easy to see a task to completion. They aren’t very adventurous, especially when it comes to unplanned activities and uncertain outcomes.
Turtles All The Way Down by John Green
There are mixed reviews about this novel but I loved it. We don’t have much OCD representation in novels and it was really really interesting hearing the internal thoughts of our protagonist in a way that everyone could understand. Turtles is about a missing person’s case that our protagonist and her best friend try to solve all the while dealing with a crippling mental illness. Where Taurus’ strive for love and appreciation, they are also hard on themselves in their journey to reach their most practical goal and can spiral into oblivion without adventure.
GEMINI
(May 21 – June 20)
Gemini represents the twins. Those who reside under this sign are very expressive, inquisitive and creative in all ways (much like my dad who is really good at drawing). They’re also very good at team activities and sporting events, with a deep desire to adventure and see the world.
Unearthed by Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner
(unearthed book 1)
Unearthed is a novel in dual perspective about a scavenger and an archeologist on an abandoned planet, forced to rely on each other in order to survive the dangers that face them in their attempt to leave the planet. It’s very much an outer-space Indiana Jones type story but with younger protagonists. They’re both seriously determined to reach a personal goal and are essentially two sides to the same coin, much like a two-sided Gemini.
CANCER
(June 21 – July 22)
This sign is very sentimental and will tend to hold onto keepsakes and memories in both a physical and mental form. They can very easily hold a grudge and will protect their family at all cost. Family – not only blood relatives – are held close to a Cancer, their loyalty and protectiveness unwavering.
Save The Date by Morgan Matson
A story about family, love, loyalty, secrets, a wedding and big screw-ups from everyone involved. This novel had me in a mess of emotions and just made me want to hug my mother so tightly and thank her for everything she’s ever done for me. I just loved how pure and wholesome this novel was and perfectly fits the loving, sentimental aesthetic of a Cancer-born.
LEO
(July 23 – August 22)
Leo’s are dominant. They’re natural-born leaders who have the willpower to stick to that which they have committed to. They’re loyal, generous, confident but can also be arrogant, stubborn and self-centred.
Once & Future by Amy Rose Capetta and Cori McCarthy
(once & future book 1)
Ari from Once & Future displays nearly all the attributes of a Leo. She is Loyal to her family, confident, stubborn, and a little arrogant. This novel is a gender-bent Arthurian retelling set in space with a whole cast of queer and disabled young-adult characters who are so relatable and lovable. This is my current favourite novel of all time and I believe everyone should read this.
VIRGO
(August 23 – September 22)
Virgo’s are a detail-oriented sign, paying attention to small human behaviours, actions or hidden details. They’re methodical in their manner of working and a very good judge of character. This sign is sometimes misunderstood for their self-criticality and what may seem like a very work-oriented attitude, although they’re just closed off and open up to those whom they have judged to be a good character and potential friend.
I Was Born For This by Alice Oseman
I always try to sneak my favourite novels in these posts in some way or another. This novel is a dual perspective – one from a fangirl and the other of a band member’s – these two come across each other in a very fanfiction-esque manner and when forced to be around each other, they learn that life is more complex and larger than they’d imagined. Look that’s a horrible description, but I love this novel and cried when I read it. I see Virgo’s hard-working and judgemental attitude, as well as their will for adventure in this novel, but what develops is the protagonist’s deeper understanding of other’s which they’d immediately dismissed.
LIBRA
(September 23 – October 22)
A very diplomatic although peaceful and fair sign who hate being alone. They like to have friends or a partner to balance out their lives, as such is the symbol of the scales that represents the sign. Libra’s strive for change, peace and equality, trying to avoid conflict wherever possible.
Starry Eyes by Jenn Bennett
Another contemporary novel about romance, friendship and finding oneself with the help of another. This novel is very Libra-esque as our protagonist has a partner which enhances their character and compliments them, making them a better version of themselves. This novel was so wholesome, heartwarming and sex-positive which contains conflict but remains non-confrontational much like a Libra.
SCORPIO
(October 23 – November 21)
Scorpio’s are passionate and assertive, at times stubborn in their views and actions and always on the hunt to find the truth. They can also be secretive as they experience emotions in deep ways, but when you befriend a Scorpio, they are loyal and a solid rock to lean on.
All Of This Is True by Lygia Day Peñaflor
It’s hard to really explain what this novel is about, but I’ll do my best. All of This is True is a mystery-style novel told in multiple formats such as interview notes, journal entries, novel, radio transcripts, etc. Throughout the novel you begin to love and hate and love each of the characters trying to understand their motives and involvement within the entire situation of which you don’t entirely find out until the end of the novel. The secrets and emotions in this novel is what made me chose it as a recommendation for the Scorpio sign.
SAGITTARIUS
(November 22 – December 21)
Much like Gemini, this sign is also energetic and curious in nature. Sagittarius loves to travel and have a philosophical view of the world which motivates their travels. On the other hand, they can be very impatient and unashamed, sometimes not thinking before they speak.
Kindred: 12 Queer #LoveOzYA Stories
This is a beautiful bind-up of short stories written by queer authors with queer and disability representation, each one unashamed to tell their stories and speak their minds. This is an anthology where people were free to be themselves and tell their stories, the ones that aren’t glorified by mainstream media, to the people who will listen.
What book would you choose for your sign? Is it different from what I chose for you?
