What I’ve Written So Far In 2020.

Hai Spicy Hoomans!

Ah, writing…

I’m writing this today because it’s a Thursday and Thursday’s mean that I participate in #TheWriteNight on Twitter. If you don’t know, #TheWriteNight is run by @TheYAPage on Twitter, which is also a writing group that meets for brunch once a month to write and chat.

If I’m not mistaken, this is the first StoryTime Wednesday (but on a Thursday) for 2020. If you’re not sure what StoryTime Wednesday is on Jasper + Spice, it’s a post I make on Wednesday – or Thursdays if I’m late – where I write or talk about my writing.

Tonight I focused on continuing my MG WIP that I started for NaNoWriMo last year. I’ve currently given it a working title of Switched, which I will only be used for my Pinterest board since I’m not totally sold on the title just yet.

Since we slid into 2020 very suddenly and unexpectedly, I have had absolutely zero motivation to read or write and it absolutely SUCKS! So, I’m forcing myself to write whenever I can and events like #TheWriteNight on Twitter really help to get the creative juices flowing. As for reading, well, I’ll work on that.

What Was Written By The End of 2019?

Are Wacky Themes from Middle Grade novels allowed in YA 2019 Blog Header Storytime Wednesday 2 300x169 - What I've Written So Far In 2020. The last update (linked here and in the image on left) I posted about writing my MG WIP – now with the working title Switched – was at the start of December last year. As of that update, I had written 23,095 words on that WIP, which was actually a huge achievement for me to do in 2 months!

By the end of 2019, I reached 25,000 words which I hadn’t written in an update as I was packing for Vietnam and just didn’t do much blogging or reading, or anything creative for that matter…

What’s Been Done In 2020?

As of today, I have written around 700 words, which brings my total to a rough 25,700 meaning that if my goal is 50,000 words, I am halfway done!

If I keep writing at the same pace I did in the last 2 months of 2019, I will have 50,000 words written by the end of Feb/ mid-March, essentially finishing the novel before the middle of 2020!!!

Agh! It’s so awesome to think about that.

Talking about this and just talking about my novel, in general, gives me the motivation to write it. Although it may seem like I speak about my novel more than I write it, talking gives me the motivation to at least get a couple hundred words out every couple weeks and small progress is still progress.

How Do I Motivate Myself to Write?

There was a question posted on Twitter by TheYAPage last night asking:

Qn: What do we need to prepare before we start writing?

The way I motivate and set myself up to write is by talking about it. I like to start by discussing my novel, remembering the storyline and my favourite parts of the story. I also bring out my Pinterest board, some writing music or walk away from a t.v. and into a bright space – although my mother always seems to want to turn the t.v. on in the room that I’m in.

This usually sets me up to start writing. After this post, I’ll open the document and get something written. Not much, but something is better than nothing.

A question for you all: What do you do to motivate yourself to write?

Are you writing something?
How is it going?
