LIFEL1K3 By Jay Kristoff | Non-Spoilery Review!

Heyo Bookaholics!

Brb, Having an Existential Crisis…

I went to the launch for this book that was held at Readings bookshop in Hawthorn. I made a post titled LifeL1k3 Book Launch, in which I include all the photos I took plus little interesting things that Amie and Jay spoke about! That was five months ago (which seems longer than it was) and I have finally read this book with no regrets!

lifelike book cover - LIFEL1K3 By Jay Kristoff | Non-Spoilery Review!Blurb:

On a floating junkyard beneath a radiation sky, a deadly secret lies buried in the scrap.

Eve isn’t looking for secrets—she’s too busy looking over her shoulder. The robot gladiator she’s just spent six months building has been reduced to a smoking wreck, and the only thing keeping her Grandpa from the grave was the fistful of credits she just lost to the bookies. To top it off, she’s discovered she can destroy electronics with the power of her mind, and the puritanical Brotherhood are building a coffin her size. If she’s ever had a worse day, Eve can’t remember it.

But when Eve discovers the ruins of an android boy named Ezekiel in the scrap pile she calls home, her entire world comes crashing down. With her best friend Lemon Fresh and her robotic conscience, Cricket, in tow, she and Ezekiel will trek across deserts of irradiated glass, infiltrate towering megacities and scour the graveyard of humanity’s greatest folly to save the ones Eve loves, and learn the dark secrets of her past.

Even if those secrets were better off staying buried.

REVIEW!

WHAT THE ACTUAL ASS!

Where do I start?

I think it’s really obvious that I love everything Jay Kristoff delivers to us readers and LifeLike is by far no exception.

Lifelike was a damn wild ride that I flew through so unbelievably fast. Plot twist after plot twist, you can never even begin to predict what is around the corner; every little lie that was exposed seemed to be the end of it but there was always another and that kept me on my toes the entire time.

Jay has made up this whole new post-apocalyptic world run by only a couple of big money corporations who use robots as slaves and leave everyone else – all the humans – homeless and in the ruins of the old world; and in all honesty I really think he isn’t far off from the truth of where the world is heading. Maybe not that soon, but further on from when LifeLike is set, it is possible that the world could be a radioactive rubbish dump run by big corporations with people putting their consciousnesses into robots and things that can physically survive in a wasteland.

Many people who’ve read the book would agree with me that Lemon Fresh is the best character in the book. I especially love her because she was very witty, swore a lot and was just an overall 20-something-year-old in a young teen’s body. My favourite line of hers is “You can call me Daddy” which in my opinion sums up her whole character (from the outside).

A big theme in this book was robots – or logika as they are called – becoming sentient and (for a reason I will not disclose) understanding that they do not own their own body or mind. This is where technology becomes very tricky and slippery, a plane that even humans have not even conquered yet with all our existential and mid-life crisis; technology will want to be there own “person” and hence deviates from their original purpose: To serve the ones that created them. In a way, a liberated logika/ robot/ etc. is like a rebellious teenager but with better skills and more power to kill.

giphy - LIFEL1K3 By Jay Kristoff | Non-Spoilery Review!(need I say more)

There are moments in this book in which the main characters have to face up to who they truly are; whether that side was hidden by someone trying to help them survive, or suppressed by their own willpower, these characters had to really win a war with themselves to inevitably become who they truly are as a person and stop hiding. I really like how the mantle of power is handed over in certain situations and the power that a name can hold.

Without spoiling anything, Jay really went to a lot of trouble to put a large amount of meaning behind the names in the book to in some ways dissociate them from either an original meaning or make the wearer of them become a different person entirely.

To close out I’d like to present you all with a lovely tweet from Mr. Jay Kristoff himself about book 2 in this series.screen shot 2018 10 15 at 9 25 31 pm - LIFEL1K3 By Jay Kristoff | Non-Spoilery Review!

★ Rating ★

I rated LIFEL1K3 a predictable ★★★★★ (5/5 stars). The first and only time so far that I’ve tried to explain my feelings for this book, I couldn’t. I physically couldn’t find the words to explain the existential crisis feeling that was stirring inside of me. My chest hurt and I ran out of breath when I went to speak. I cannot believe a book has given me feelings that strong I couldn’t even-
