Heyo Bookaholics!
Yesterday (9 Feb 2018), my mother and I went to the book launch of Ironheart by Jodi McAlister!
The event was held in Readings Kids, a kids/ young adult bookstore the opened up on Lygon Street in Carlton, Melbourne mid last year. It sits beside its older brother store Readings, which sells all the big kids books such as non-fiction and all genres other than kids and YA.
As we walked in, my first impressions of the event was very overwhelming as there were already so many people in such a small place, though I am not claustrophobic, I get nervous when I show up late and people are already in place.
Being a Friday night, and not a weekend, there were not many people in the small bookshop and the only Melbourne bloggers I recognised were Sarah and Alex from TheYARoom; so after saying Hi, I stuck with my mum and gave her the low-down of what generally goes on at these events.
On the right Nicole Hayes sits down with Jodi McAlister (left) in a relaxed interview, where she talked about how much her and her 14 year-old daughter loved reading Ironheart, even the steamy ‘kissing‘ scenes, said in such a way where I feel it necessary to use inverted commas around the word.
Jodi spoke of characters in her books, mainly mentioning the twins in Valentine, and how she came about their characters. She said that there was no real reason why they were made twins, though she did need characters around the same age and maturity to play their parts. Jodi also mentioned that her mother was a twin, though that had no impact on the characters.
Author Danielle Binks was called out by McAlister, all eyes turning on her in where she was hidden in the crowd; and although I turned my camera to her, I caught her face on video though was too shy to go and ask her for a photo, so
We were given a special name drop of the third book in the series, a name of which I have forgotten, though there is no doubt I’d be picking it up when it is launched next year.
But first CAKE! OMG I can never get over the cakes created by @cakeandmadness. Her amazing work just blows me away, and it pains me to turn down the amazing cakes at every book launch because I’ve made a choice to not eat cake. This one featured a heart with an arrow through it atop giant base with hearts. It’s very confusing as the bottom screams LOVE and the top screams MURDER!
The event went for an hour, which worked conveniently with the parking restrictions in the area. Jodi was so lovely when I went up to get my books signed, she even told me to watch Outlander (and not read the books), because my name Brianna is spelt exactly like the character in the show.
Overall it was an amazing night, and I’m glad my mum agreed to come among and see a part of my world that she doesn’t really understand, and has never been into. I enjoyed sharing the night with her and meeting another Aussie author, hearing all the hype has made me so happy to be a part of the Aus YA Community.

Stay Happy, Healthy, and have a Lovely Week!!
