Control Freakz by Michael Evans | I Didn’t Finish This Book Spoilery Review
This book was kindly sent to me in eBook format from YA Bound Book Tours this week in exchange for an honest review.

Heyo Bookaholics!

I apologise that this review is almost four days late, but I’ve been so so busy with uni assignments, work, and professional interviews, it took me a lot longer than expected to read this book – considering I didn’t even finish it!

Today I bring to you all, a book review for a book I DID NOT FINISH (DNF)!!!

Goodreads Summary:

Alone. Abandoned. Threatened. Natalie has lost all hope for a better future. Everything she’s known and everyone she’s ever loved is gone, and it’s up to her to get her old life back. In Michael Evans’s first novel, Control Freakz, Natalie’s journey toward a better life begins.

When Protocol 00 is enacted, Natalie’s family is taken by the government, along with the families of her two best friends, Ethan and Hunter. With nothing to lose, and the threat of government hitmen kidnapping them at any moment, the three must battle to survive in a horrid, post-apocalyptic world run by President Ash and his invasive government. They want answers. And they’re willing to jeopardize everything in desperate pursuit.

Risking ruthless leaders, attempted mind control, and her very existence on the planet, Natalie, along with Hunter and Ethan, will stop at nothing in their quest to regain everything they’ve ever known. Her spirits crushed and her will to live destroyed, Natalie knows everything is dead and gone, and soon she will be, too.

Memories connect us to the past, and can often cause us to long for a better future, but they can drive our minds into a state of hell if a better future is unattainable. Nevertheless, Natalie’s hope for a better a future remains.

DNF? Why?

The decision to DNF a book is a hard one, especially if

it is a book I have been sent for review, but this book was really just going nowhere. I asked people on Instagram for their opinion on DNFing a book that I have been given for review, and they said it was perfectly fine, justified by the fact that all opinions are my own and in all actuality, not everyone will enjoy the book.

There is a completely horrible lack of world building and the characters and so shallow it just made my blood boil every time I tried to read it. It felt like someone was forcing my already tired eyes to stare at this, this piece of Monet artwork style of all-over-the-place writing till I could do it no more.

Review!

Yes, this will be a negative review, my first negative review for that matter. If you do not like negative reviews, please feel free to explore the rest of my blog for more light-hearted posts. I am currently feeling very ‘savage’ and offended right now, and have made the most recent decision to DNF this book for reasons explained below.

1. There are so many metaphors. Metaphors trying to metaphorise metaphors, it’s really distracting and annoying, especially when I – the reader – have to go from one scene in the book to a completely unrelated scenario then back to the scene in the book. In my opinion, metaphors should relate directly to the story.

The phrase “just like…” appeared at the end of every feeling, action or sentence. He was trying to convey a feeling that in most cases many people are fond of or have experienced, by relating it to something no one has ever felt before, for instance, the phrase;

“…thirst starting to flow through my blood like sepsis.”

According to my good friend Google, sepsis is “the presence in tissues of harmful bacteria and their toxins, typically through infection of a wound”. This sentence for one can be stopped after the word thirst, and secondly only a very small percentage of people will know what sepsis feels like, and an even smaller percentage have read this book.

2. The first chapter pulled me in, the rest threw me back out. Damn, so this is really sad. Something was going good in the beginning, there was a plot being formed, the character relationships had room to grow and be explained, but as the story progressed even to the next chapter, the whole thing was about trying to describe her every feeling and how “death was at her door”, it was boring and repetitive.

3. Far too many unnecessary descriptions! Just words where words aren’t needed. One that bugged me the most was the over-explanation of a situation by describing a person’s facial features. The “deep” in “deep brown eyes” was not necessary in the sentence due to context; and even for me with my writing, it’s all about finding the right time and place to add character descriptions, and this wasn’t it.

4. I learnt a new word that sums up this whole case. Far too unnecessary use of Pleonasms. Pleonasms are (according to my good friend Google), “the use of more words than are necessary to convey meaning (e.g. see with one’s eyes ), either as a fault of style or for emphasis.” This is far too overused.

5. Chapter 2 opening paragraph is amazing.

6. WHY DOES SHE KEEP SCREAMING?! Why? Why do men always write women as weak creatures who think they’re going to die and the men have so much composure? This is what the main character was like, just a weak ball of wanting to die and being dragged around by the boys who made all the decisions. Also, how did her boyfriend not talk some sense into her?! Such unrealistic descriptions of women, and as a woman myself it angered me to see a female antagonist no less, seeming like the sidekick in her own life story.

★ Rating ★

I do not think it fair to give this book an official rating as I never finished it, but as you may be able to deduce from the above ‘review’ of what I have read, I most certainly do not rate this book highly (or middle-ly for that matter).

Further Disclaimer: I do want to say that I am quite grateful for YA Bound Books for allowing me to send this book, and to the author – Michael Evans – for providing the website with copies of his novel.
