I finally read Warcross. 

If you haven’t yet seen my March TBR that was posted two weeks ago (please click the link and read it!), Warcross was a book that I had started at the end of Feburary (21st is not the end but who cares…) and made it my life goal to finish before mid-March. I did that and I have a bit to say about the experience.

I had this book bumped up so high on my TBR because as mentioned in my March TBR, my boyfriend really wanted me to read one of the books he bought me for Christmas. So because of this I dedicate this post to my wonderfully amazing boyfriend who has the word Shadowhunters burnt into his brain xxx

Review

There were so many great aspects to this book, and considering I have never read a Marie Lu book in my life, I think I’ve started in a good place.

Going into this book, the writing style is not what I expected from such a hyped author. Where I usually read loaded books that are so in-depth with feeling and emotion that sometimes it can go wrong; this book was very stripped back. The writing was simple yet descriptive to the point where I could become immersed into the story without having to fumble around big words and pages upon pages of the same scene. I loved the fact that is was a nice light, though action (and romance) packed read with a killer plot twist at the end that had me SHOOK!

I loved just opening the book and the first few pages contained an alternative format in between the text. There were various text message conversations, news headlines, and written visuals from the Warcross game scattered throughout the overall text making the reading experience a little more immersive and fun.

It was refreshing to read a YA book set in the modern day, from the point of view of a young adult the same age as myself. Yeah I said ‘modern day’ because Warcross isn’t too far from today’s reality, with people playing virtual reality games, sitting in driverless vehicles, and video-game championship tournaments becoming more common.

The thing I actually adored in this book was the romance. I was certainly predictable from the beginning, but I enjoyed the subtle way in which it developed. It was the typical ‘girl-gets-with-her-celeb-crush-and-has-everything’ but with a twist, being that everything Emika received from from Hideo was due to his horrible miss-interpretation of what she wanted from him.

The greatest part of this novel was how well the romance and action worked together, and that the romance didn’t overshadow the action that the whole book was centred around. Even in the end where Emika had to make the hard choice whether to side with Hideo or go against him, she chose to fight for the greater good and fight against him despite her strong love for him. Because all of us sane humans know that if you love someone you have to let them go, especially if they have a plan to mind control everyone in the world.

I gave this book a ★★★★☆ (4/5 star) rating on Goodreads, where comparing it to the usual YA books I tend to read – like Shadowhunters – which are full of emotion and depth, this was a more light and fun read. Not as intense, though good for reading in between the intensity.
