Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children | Movie Review

Hey Ho Bookaholics!

As mentioned in my review for Library Of Souls, the last book in The Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children trilogy by Ransom Riggs, I said that I would post a review for the movie as soon as it was released, and though it is 3 months from the release date I am posting this review as I have very strong (negative) feelings about the movie.

Let me start by saying that I am not a movie reviewer and I do not know any movie lingo to be able to deconstruct this movie but I can give my honest opinion on the movie.

I would also like to say that the movie is a very well constructed – obviously, considering was directed by the amazing Tim Burton – but as a fan of the books which as amazing pieces of literature, this movie does them no justice. No justice at all.

When Jacob discovers clues to a mystery that stretches across time, he finds Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. But the danger deepens after he gets to know the residents and learns about their special powers.

Director: Tim Burton

Writers:Ransom Riggs (based upon the novel written by),  Jane Goldman (screenplay)

My first flaw with this movie appeared before the movie was even released. When I read books or watch movies, I rate my love for the movie/ film based off three main aspects in this order; characters, storyline, and writing/ execution (respectively). I hated – and I do not use this word lightly – the fact that Emma and Olive’s powers were switched, it totally changed up the whole storyline and thus having it deviate from that of the books. Another characterisation that I despised arrose when I was only probably half an hour into the movie. As many who read the book can agree, Alma Peregrine is an exterodinary and tough lady, who did not need to change at all, but for some reason, the director, writer, whoever did it thought that Miss Meregrine should be damn obsessed with the time. NO! This I didn’t like for the whole fact that in the movie Miss Peregrine was portrayed as some time conscious, controlling law-maker, which totally contradicted her character in the book of a rebelious woman who was a guardian like mother to the children but let them have fun. Her carefree and rebelious attitude is what made me like her in the books, but in the movie she annoyed me as she was anxious and time conscious all the time.

Though, if I were to evaluate the movie on what I saw and not in comparison to the books, I did really like what the writer and director did with the characters and minimal knowledge of the peculiar world they had at their disposal.

The dark and dim lighting throughout most of the movie occured at the right times and gave it that creepy, peculiar vibe that I expected upon reading the summary of the movie, and when the movie took a more happy turn – like the boat scene at the end – the lighting became brighter coplimenting the mood.

I really liked the begining of the movie, but what really impressed me was the alternative use of Emma’s power of air’ and not just flight, but how she could contol the air around her, with the coolest part of the movie baing the scene where she made the old boat rise to the surface.

The little scene between Emma and Jacob on the boat was so cute and, though alot of backstory is needed to understand the controvercy of their relationship, it did set the scene to show Enoch’s anger toward their relationship, keeping to his characteristic bitterness which I loved!

movie time peculiars - Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children | Movie Review

The screen shot above is from a ‘movie-time’ scene where Horace shares his visions and I did like this touch. The eye-glass he uses is very old fashioned, and the way everyone came together in this one shotis quite beautiful, giving a family vibe to the to the small group of peculiars.

Rating: I refuse to rate this movie as my rating will be entierly biased and no-one will benafit from any stars I may place against this movie.

Opinions/ Comments: I’d love to hear all of your opinions on the movie, especially if you haven’t read the books; please drop your opinions in the comments section below. I would also love to hear feedback on my first movie review and how I did.

Thank You so much for reading and I hope to see you all back here again Saturday 🙂
