I am back with another book review!

I now own two script books; Hold Me Closer: A Tiny Cooper Story by David Levithan, and now this book Harry Potter and The Cursed Child by J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany & Jack Thorne. I do hope to purchase the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: Origional Screenplay book by J. K. Rowling.

The Review!

I would like to begin by saying that I do understand this is a play script, and the actors will convey all the emotions for the viewers, so the script shoud not be read like a book or a typical Harry Potter novel.

OMG I am just going to go right ahead and say that what I loved most of all about this story  was that it starts exactly where the 7th book left off, at Kings Cross Station on the platform where Albus Severus is farewelling his family before his first journey to Hogwarts. This was the factor that lead me to ignore all the critics and continue with the story. Then there was the – somewhat – confusung part; I became a bit confused as to some of the dialoge as it seemed different from what was included in the epilogue of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, and devoid of all the emotion that Harry had expressed for his friends and well everyone throught the past seven books.

On page 6, Harry says “Best to do it at a run if you’re nervous.” to an excited Albus before he makes his way onto platform 9 and 3/4. This is exactly what Molly said to him on his first run through the wall between platfroms 9 and 10! I picked up on this straight away and was so excited, mostly because it shows that Harry had seen Molly as a mother and modeled hiself off of her.

I also have this wierd dot point in my review notes that just prety much sums up the whole book: “18 pages in and it’s already life!“

Yeah look so can I just say, I was not expecting Albus to be in Slytherin. Despite the refernce to it in the epilogue AND the begining of The Cursed Child, I was still NOT expecting Slytherin!!! It was a pretty unique twist and I loved it! Honestly I would’ve hated if Albus was in Griffindor, it wouldve been too typical and predictable. Putting him in Slytherin was a pretty big curveball that I felt, set the scene for the whole story.

I Finished this beauty in 12 hours. I was expecting more from it but because it is a play, written in script form, I guess there is only a limited amount of information and enotion that can be conveyed. To me, this story felt like a work of fanfiction and more of a companion novel than an official 8th book; because it technically isn’t a book, it is a script. A story that needs another element – performance – to give the reader the full experience with not only knowledge of the story, but the emotion it carries.

Overall it was a lovely and touching story that had me at times begging for mercy and others laughing aloud.

Unlike all the other Harry Potter books, I reated this particular book ★★★★☆ (4/5 stars), for reasons mentioned above.
