the hammer of thor - The Hammer of Thor + Asgardian Book Tag

Magnus Chase and the Hammer of Thor is the second book in the Gods of Asgard series by Rick Riordan, and will be released on October 4th.
This novel follows Magnus Chase as he embarks on his journey to find Thor’s hammer. Why you ask? Well the thunder god has a disturbing habit of misplacing his weapon–the mightiest force in the Nine Worlds. But this time the hammer isn’t just lost, it has fallen into enemy hands. If Magnus Chase and his friends can’t retrieve the hammer quickly, the mortal worlds will be defenseless against an onslaught of giants. Ragnarok will begin. The Nine Worlds will burn. Unfortunately, the only person who can broker a deal for the hammer’s return is the gods’ worst enemy, Loki–and the price he wants is very high.

(ft. characters from Magnus Chase and The Gods of Asgard series)

There are 9 worlds in the Norse Mythology including Asgard. Asgard is one of the Nine Realms, more specifically the one inhabited by the Aesir tribe of Norse gods. Asgard is ruled over by Odin and his wife, Frigg. I spoke of Norse Mythology a bit in my Magnus Chase Anticipation post almost a year ago.

Freya is the Norse Vanir godess of love, beauty, gold, and sorcery. She is the mother to Magnus’s friend Blitzen and likes cats.

My favourite fictional motherly figure is of course Molly Weasley from the Harry Potter series. Whether you’ve read the series or not, you know who Molly is. What I especially about her is the way she treats Harry as one of her own sons. I only recently read the Harry Potter books and it really dawned on me how much Molly loves Harry, especially in the scene where she sees Harry’s dead body among her other children in her boggart.

Loki is a trickster half-Jotunn, brother of Thor, father of Samirah Al-Abbas, and Magnus’s enemy.

The only tricksters that come to mind are Fred and George Weasley. I only recently read the Harry Potter books after years of watching the movies on repeat and even attempting a HP movie marathon one time. Fred and George were never shown much in the movies, but in the books they are always there, like brothers to Harry.

Odin is known as the All-Father and is the ruler of Asgard alongside his wife Frigg. He is the father to both Thor and Loki.

Idris from Them Mortal Instrumens series by Cassandra Clare is a briliant creation. The glass city is my dream city. I always imagine it as a small medieval city with cobblestone streets and small bluestone cottages sitting tightly side-by-side, with the giant glass spires at the centre of the city near the town hall and official buildings.

The son of Odin, Thor is the Norse Aesir god of thunder, strength, fertility, and consecration, and is physically the strongest of the Asgardians. He is married to the Norse goddess Sif and the father of demigods Lars Alhstrom and Gunilla.

In Magnus Chase and The Sword of Summer, Thor isn’t quite up-to-date with his t.v. shows which startled me as to how he would even get cable up in Asgard. Before reading Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, I assumed that the book was about a bunch of kids with literal superpowers, what I wasn’t expecting was aged children with really quite peculiar (no pun intended) talents.

Yggdrasil (pronounced “IG-druh-sill”) is an immense tree that is in connection to which the nine worlds exist.

This tree provides a connection between the 9 realms. So for this tag I’m going to chose one of my favourite books, The Eye Of Minds by James Dashner which isn’t interdimensional or international travel of any sorts but the characters ‘travel’ into a virtual reality where they go on adventures which cannot be sought in their waking state.

Hotel Valhalla is the paradise for warriors (who have died bravely in battle) in the service of Odin, located in the Grove of Glasir in Asgard. It was founded and owned by Odin and managed by Helgi.

More Than This by Patrick Ness is a book about a town which went into a virtual reality to escape their problems, death and the whole natural world. This reminded me so much of the afterlife becuase the main characters parents only chose to go into this virtual world with hopes that they will get their dead son back.

I don’t really read many ‘afterlife’ style books. If you do, drop your recs in the comments below.

Hel is the youngest of the three children of the trickster God Loki. She presides over the afterlife, Hell, and is said to look like a horrible hag with a half alive and half dead face sporting a gloomy and grim expression.

Hel’s mother is a giant and her father a God, making her a half-breed. Half-breeds are not a new thing in fiction books, as they’ve been around for a while; one of my favourite being obviously Magnus Chase! Magnus Chase is the first Rick Riordan character I have been introduced to so far (I’m a little late on the Percy train), and he is probably the coolest teenager I’ve been introduced to.

If you don’t already know, I am compleatly and utterly obsessed with anything Shadowhunters (and Steampunk)! The home I’d love to live in is the London Institute from The Infernal Devices. Living in a giant church like building with a billion bedrooms would usually seeem creepy to me, but the inhabitants of the London Institute and the immortal cat who also lives there is enough to make me feel safe. Besides the Institute also has a training room, weapons room, and library. What more can I ask for?

Mjolnir (pronounced “ME-ol-neer”), also spelled Mjølnir,  is Thor’s hammer. According to Samirah al-Abbas, it is the most powerful weapon in all of the Nine Realms.

The Golden Compas from His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman is one artifact that I would love to own. For the person who knows how to interpret it, it can give you the answer to any question you ask it. Lyra in my opinion used it very wisely and causiously. If I owned it, I would’ve asked it a whole range of questions (both smart and stupid), like why is the sky blue? Just to see what it would say, becuase this particualr object is pwered by Dark Matter and is very intelectual.

The Fenris Wolf  is the wolf son of Loki, who is destined to start Ragnarök after Surt severs his binds. He is the brother of Hel and Jormungand, as well as the half-brother of Sleipnir and Samirah al-Abbas.

I’ve recently (officially) joined the Harry Potter fandom after marathonning the whole book series for the first time in my life, after years of watching the movies over and over and over… Since Prisoner of Azkaban, Sirius Black and Remus Lupin have been my favourite characters. I can now wee why people want to see more Maruders content. I would love that too. Both those men have seriously (pun intended) dark pasts and it just makes their characters more misterious and intriguing.

BONUS!

91 - The Hammer of Thor + Asgardian Book Tag

Magnus Chase is a sixteen-year-old, homeless teenager who lived in Boston, Massachusetts. He is the Norse demigod son of Frey and Natalie Chase, as well as the cousin of Greek demigod Annabeth Chase. After dying and becoming an einherji, he lives his afterlife in Hotel Valhalla.

Micheal from – you guessed it – The Eye of Minds is a petty exceptional young warrior. He really ownly shows a true need for braveness and battle in the second and third book where he shows exceptional leadership and in the end of it all, resiliance to accept his fate and his life as it must be.

Samirah “Sam” al-Abbas is Magnus Chase’s Valkyrie and is the demigod daughter of Loki.

I’m currently reading Initiate by Laura L. Fox for review from OfTomes Publishing and the main character Riga Garrison is a major rebel! After discovering that the organisation of people who run everything in the Tunnel are hiding a major secret from her, Riga is determined to find out what it is and expose them, although her plan doesn’t go to plan and she realises that there is really no one she can trust, especially not her own mother.

This novel is available to pre-order in all formats online now!!
